Vikings Snap Three Game Losing Streak with Win over Liberty

Purcellville (Apr. 24, 2009) – The Loudoun Valley High School baseball team defeated Liberty, 4-1, at Fireman’s Field on Friday to snap a three game slide. Senior Kevin Rinek started on the hill for the Vikes, throwing six complete innings. Rinek allowed only one run on four hits. Senior Daniel Burke pitched the final inning to preserve the win.

In the bottom of the first inning, senior Iain Mottice led off with a single. Senior Wes Walker followed with a walk. One out later, freshman Matt Reed hit an RBI single to plate Mottice for a 1-0 Viking lead. Eagle pitcher Cody Donelan would get Andrew Creamer to line out into a double play to end the frame.

The Eagles would tie it in the top of the second. Donelan led off the inning for the Eagles with a single. Jeb Early would reach on a 6-4 fielder’s choice. Josh Hemperly drew a walk. With runners on first and second base, catcher Bryant Hines laced a double to left field scoring Early. As Hemperly was waved around third, left fielder Reed threw to shortstop Daniel Fleming, and his relay throw to catcher Walker was in time to get Hemperly out at the plate. Rinek would get the next Eagle hitter to pop out to first for the final out of the inning.

Senior Beattie Southerland led off the bottom of the second inning with a double to the gap in left centerfield. Donelan would get the next Viking hitter to fly out. Senior Trey Clark would reach on a walk putting runners at first and second base. Junior Mac Khosla stepped to the plate and during his at bat, Donelan would throw a wild pitch advancing the runners in scoring position. Khosla would ground out to second base, scoring Southerland. With two outs, Mottice hit a deep drive to centerfield to leg out a triple scoring Clark from third for a 3-1 Viking lead.

The Vikes would add another run in the bottom of the sixth for insurance.

The Vikings improve to 4-7 overall and are 3-5 in the Cedar Run District. The Eagles fall to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in the Cedar Run District. The Vikings play again on Saturday, April 25 in a non-district contest against Wakefield at Fireman’s Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
