Marshall Captures Cheers Sports Spring Break Title

South Riding (Apr. 8, 2009) – Marshall High School captured the Cheers Sports Spring Break Baseball Tournament Wednesday with a 11-1 win over Park View on a final day of the three-day tournament that saw near freezing wind chill temperatures and even a snow flurry or two.

“My players were asking if that was snow and I told them it was Cherry Blossoms falling off the trees,” joked Dominion coach Jay Raines, who saw his team defeat host and Dulles District foe Freedom, 16-1, in the fifth place contest.

It was a high-scoring final day — and tournament — for sure with Marshall’s 11 runs the fewest scored of any winner with Thomas Jefferson stopping Wakefield, 17-7, in the seventh place game and Liberty topping Bishop O’Connell, 16-8, in the third place match-up. Overall, 11 teams scored double digits in the 16-game tournament. Winning teams averaged 11.4 runs per game and there were 243 overall runs scored.
